Tire Industry CEOs Commit to Sustainable Plan

United States. This month, CEOs from ten global tire manufacturers met to confirm a two-year roadmap for the Tire Industry Project (TIP), focused on research and sustainability initiatives throughout the tire lifecycle.

This plan, which covers the years 2024 and 2025, includes research on tyre emissions and strategies for the management of end-of-life tyres.

TIP's executive director, Larisa Kryachkova, highlighted the group's commitment. "Our new roadmap underscores our members' commitment to a tire value chain that has a positive impact on people and the planet," he said.

"We are evolving and taking an increasingly collaborative, solution-oriented approach to generate the knowledge, commitment and actions needed to drive a sustainable tire lifecycle."

TIP, co-chaired by Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear and Michelin, also includes members such as Hankook, Kumho, Pirelli, Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Toyo Tires and Yokohama.

The progress of the project is regularly reviewed by the CEOs of these companies and a watchdog group of independent scientists, TIP said.

The review of the 2022-2023 work plan highlighted six peer-reviewed scientific studies, including research on the aging of TRWPs in the environment and methods for identifying TRWPs in environmental samples.

He also reported on regional workshops for end-of-life tire management, which culminated in a report on challenges and potential solutions in various regions, including the U.S., Europe, China, and India.

In addition, TIP expanded its reporting on key performance indicators related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
