Mexico. Volkswagen plans to start producing electric cars from its plant in Puebla within about three years.
To this end, it has two investment packages; one of them for 763.5 million dollars, according to Holger Nestler, president of Volkswagen in Mexico, in an interview with Forbes.
The first project is focused on making production processes more environmentally friendly, while the second is aimed at adapting the plant for the production of zero-emission vehicles.
The amount of the investment will be announced in the first quarter of 2024, while the electric model to be produced will be defined in about 15 months.
"What about electric vehicles in Mexico, are we going to produce them or not? Of course, but first we have to start with a transformation of the industry, here in Mexico we are precisely in that process, where we are making different changes at Volkswagen Mexico," said Nestler.
The German automaker is part of a group of three global manufacturers that are currently adapting their Mexican plants to produce electric cars in the short or medium term, while two more are already producing zero-emission vehicles in the country.
Kia, along with BMW, are the other two companies carrying out upgrades and expansions at their plants in Pesquería, Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí, respectively.
