BMW announces Vertical Dynamics Management in upcoming 5 Series

BMW

International. The flexible powertrain technology offered by the new BMW 5 Series range, which offers a choice between classic internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrid solutions and electric powertrains, leads to wide variations in vehicle weight.

With this in mind, the model-specific chassis tuning, on a case-by-case basis, and the corresponding application of all control systems provide the characteristic BMW driving pleasure, regardless of the driving concept involved.

As a top-of-the-range model variant, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is equipped as standard with Professional Adaptive Suspension including electronically controlled dampers. This suspension system can also be specified as an option for the BMW i5 eDrive40.

Thanks to an innovative BMW Vertical Dynamics Management form, it offers a noticeable increase in sporty performance combined with a level of driving comfort that also represents a clear step forward compared to its predecessor.

The latest version of BMW's Vertical Dynamics Management, now in its ninth generation, makes its debut in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. This technology is based on a newly developed and widely interconnected control logic, and takes into account all available input variables, such as wheel speed, steering angle, degree of rotation on the vertical axis (yaw rate) and acceleration, to establish the ideal damping forces.

The system no longer calculates the necessary damping forces using mathematical models, but favours the physical calculation of data on current driving conditions. This ensures clearly defined body control and precise suspension response in every driving situation.

Professional Adaptive Suspension is offered for all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan (either standard or optional, depending on the model), ensuring the usual BMW driving pleasure. The new generation of the executive sedan therefore combines driving comfort approaching the levels of the BMW 7 Series with the familiar sporty agility of the BMW 3 Series.
