Magna and Mercedes-Benz close an era of joint innovation

International. After decades of collaboration, Magna and Mercedes-Benz mark the end of a strategic partnership that has driven innovation in the automotive industry.

Since 1979, the two companies have worked together on the development of powertrains, transmission, ADAS technologies, body and chassis components, electrification, interiors and vehicle assembly.

Eric Wilds, Chief Strategy and Commercial Officer at Magna, highlighted the importance of this relationship: "Strong partnerships with our clients are key to moving the industry forward. Our collaboration with Mercedes-Benz demonstrates how working together drives innovative solutions and mutual success."

One of the most significant milestones of this alliance has been the production of more than 500,000 units of Mercedes-Benz's iconic SUV at Magna's plant in Graz, Austria. In 2024, the company started a new chapter with the manufacture of the eDS Duo electric powertrain at its plant in Lannach, Austria. This innovative system now equips the electric version of the legendary vehicle, elevating its performance and efficiency.

Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain, highlighted the impact of this technology: "After supplying three generations of transfer cases for this model, we are proud to be part of its evolution towards electrification."

The eDS Duo, with a two-speed transmission and dual electric motor, offers up to 240 kW of power and enhanced off-road capabilities. Its innovative individual wheel drive system enables advanced functions such as the "G-Turn", which enables a 360-degree rotation on its own axis. In addition, its optimized design with silicon carbide technology and decoupling maximizes efficiency without compromising performance.

With this transition, Magna reinforces its role in the electrification of industry and in the search for sustainable solutions for the mobility of the future.
