INA: auto parts industry strengthens with Tesla's arrival in Mexico

Autopartes

Mexico. For the National Auto Parts Industry (INA), Tesla Motors ' investment for the construction of a plant in Nuevo León will boost business opportunities in the automotive and auto parts sector in Mexico, which will help accelerate the transition to electromobility in the country.

INA highlighted the role that Mexico has played for the manufacture of Tesla vehicles, as it estimates that at least 20% of the value of current units is of national origin.

According to INA forecasts, this percentage will increase with the establishment of the company in the country, derived from the history that exists of clean technology models produced in national territory, such as Ford's Mustang Mach-E, which has up to 80% of value manufactured in Mexico.

INA mentioned that the manufacture of auto parts represents 37% of investment opportunities in Mexico derived from nearshoring and expects around 15 billion dollars of investment in the next five years, destined to the production of components such as batteries and other parts for electric cars, particularly after Tesla's announcement.

In addition, the arrival of investment from the US company has the potential to boost the development of infrastructure and other incentives for the adoption of electric vehicles, since it is expected that, of the total vehicles that will be consumed in the world in 10 years, at least 50% of them will be hybrid and electric, so Mexico would be advancing in this matter.

Until Tesla's investment announcement in Mexico, INA's electric car production forecast by 2030 was around 4.7 million units, representing 15% of the total vehicles manufactured in the country. This figure will increase when adding the units produced by the US company in national territory.

In relation to employment in the auto parts industry, the INA mentions that the forecast is to reach 891,000 jobs by the end of 2023, surpassing the record of 886,000 in 2018. Tesla's investment will further boost job creation in the coming years, stemming from auto parts companies moving to the country as part of the supply chain.
