Intentional. Continental has presented a detailed technical report on the evolution of tire technology, highlighting key developments since its founding in 1871.
The company closes the year celebrating more than 150 years of development that have transformed tires from simple rubber products to fundamental components for modern mobility.
The report looks back at key moments in Continental's history, starting with the first pneumatic tyres, which were introduced at the end of the 19th century. These tires set a benchmark in terms of comfort, as they offered greater flexibility by having an inner tube, instead of the rigid solid rubber tires that were common at the time.
A pivotal moment in the company's history occurred in 1924, when Continental was the first German company to introduce balloon tires. These tires required significantly lower air pressure than their predecessors, improving safety and driving comfort. Edwin Goudswaard, Head of Research and Development at Continental Tires, points out that this innovation was made possible by the use of a new type of flexible fabric, which replaced the linen fabric used in previous tyres.
In addition to advances in comfort and safety, Continental has focused efforts on improving the energy efficiency of tires. The company has been a benchmark in reducing rolling resistance since the energy crisis of the 1970s. This approach culminated in the development of fuel-efficient tires, as well as solutions tailored to electric vehicles, which seek to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Edwin Goudswaard, Head of Research and Development at Continental Tires: "Continental's tyre technologies have had an increasingly significant impact on mobility."
Another significant development was the introduction of tubeless tires in 1943, an innovation that continues to influence tire manufacturing today. These tires, which weigh less and require less maintenance, offer better energy efficiency and greater driving comfort due to their ability to operate with lower air pressure.
In the field of safety, Continental has been responsible for numerous developments. In 1904, the company developed the first tires with a tread pattern to improve grip on the road. In 1934, Continental launched one of the world's first winter tires, significantly increasing safety in adverse weather conditions.
Recently, the company has integrated advanced digital technologies into its products. Through solutions such as ContiConnect and ContiPressureCheck, Continental has transformed the way tires are managed in commercial fleets, allowing operators to continuously monitor tread pressure, temperature and depth, improving safety and optimizing maintenance costs.
This white paper highlights Continental's commitment to innovation, sustainability, continuous improvement of safety, comfort and efficiency in mobility.
