United States. Plews & Edelmann has been awarded a US patent for its innovative threadless selective nozzle system.
This innovative technology sets a new benchmark in the design of universal filters for power steering, addressing long-standing challenges in filter adaptation and installation.
The patented technology focuses on a unique system of interchangeable end connections that can be easily changed to fit different hose sizes. Each filter is equipped with several pairs of these innovative fittings, designed to provide precise connections for 3/8" (9.5mm), 1/2" (13mm) and 5/8" (16mm) internal diameter (ID) power steering hoses.
This versatile connection system achieves true universal application coverage for over 99% of domestic and imported vehicles, eliminating the common frustration of purchasing the wrong size filters, which has plagued both professional technicians and hobby mechanics.
"We started from scratch with the goal of creating the best possible filter for power steering," explained Anthony Holguin, Director of Category Management at Plews & Edelmann and co-inventor. "An obvious issue that came up continuously was size issues. Customers would buy a filter, cut the return line only to realize that the filter wasn't right for the hose diameter. With the interchangeable nozzles, customers can now install the filter with confidence, without worrying about being left with a damaged return hose."
This customer-focused development process led to the creation of the patented connection system. "This filter was specifically developed with our intuitive system of selective nozzles with no thread on both ends, allowing the filter to be easily resized to fit any common power steering return hose," said Toby Kuntzelman, Engineering Manager at Plews & Edelmann and co-inventor of the patented design. "The innovation represents a significant advance in the accessibility of power steering filters."
The patented threadless system features an innovative retention design that ensures a secure connection without the need for traditional threading. Each connection includes a precision channel that accepts a retaining clip, creating a positive lock when inserted into the filter body. An internal O-ring inside the filter maintains a constant sealing pressure at the connection after installation, ensuring leak-free operation.
The fittings feature graduated pitches that correspond to standard power steering hose sizes, allowing for a secure and tight seal on various hose diameters. The system also takes into account internal flow patterns to optimize and maintain constant fluid dynamics, regardless of connection configuration. This attention to hydraulic engineering ensures that filter performance remains consistent in all applications.
Beyond its revolutionary connection system, the filter incorporates dual filtration technology and a large magnet housed in an anodized aircraft aluminum body, providing superior protection against both metallic and non-metallic contamination. The compact, repairable design ensures easy installation in tight spaces, while maintaining high flow rates.
The technology is currently available in the Edelmann Elite power steering filter which includes the filter, 6 connectors in total and two stainless steel hose clamps.
