INA Announces Record Projections and Key Trends for the Industry in 2024

Producción

Mexico. With official figures, the National Auto Parts Industry (INA) reported that in the period January - December 2023, a total production of 121,158 million dollars was reached, of which 87% was directed to export markets.

This figure contributed to generating an annual trade surplus of US$37.325 billion, with the United States as the main export market.

As reported by its general director, Armando Cortés, the states of Coahuila, Guanajuato, Nuevo León and Chihuahua consolidated as the main auto parts producing states in 2023, with productions of US$18,452; US$15,918; US$14,800 and US$10,648 million, respectively. With these results, the North and Bajio regions consolidate their leadership by comprising 78.5% of the total production of auto parts in Mexico.

The national auto parts association also highlighted that 42.5% of all auto parts imported by the United States come from Mexico. That's four times more than the U.S. imports from Canada and 5.5 times more than it imports from China in terms of auto parts. "The competitiveness of the U.S. industry could not be explained without Mexico's invaluable contribution in the value chain," Cortés said.

Chihuahua, Coahuila, State of Mexico, and Guanajuato were the main recipient states of FDI for auto parts in 2023, obtaining 23.2%, 11.4%, 11.1%, and 9.6% respectively. These four states received more than 55% of all sector FDI in the country. Notably, Germany and Japan surpassed the United States in investment, and China surpassed Canada.

Finally, the association released data related to the production of batteries to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles assembled in the region, especially in order to comply with the regional content regulations established in the USMCA. So far, the United States leads the estimated production with installed battery capacity in 20 states by 2030, while Mexico registers projects in Chihuahua, Coahuila and Jalisco.
