Open source in vehicle software

CARIAD_Eclipse

International. The company today presented CARIAD's first project for open source development right at the Eclipse Foundation's Contributor Day in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Other projects will follow in the coming months.

CARIAD, the Volkswagen Group's automotive software company, joined the Eclipse Foundation's open source community as a strategic member of the Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) working group. For the first time, CARIAD will actively collaborate on open source software and contribute projects and code for further development within the community.

By joining the Eclipse Foundation, CARIAD pursues the goal of more efficient development of basic software for use in vehicles. Together with developers from around the world, CARIAD strives to create innovations and open standards for automotive software.

"Open cooperation within the developer community is critical to a functioning digital ecosystem. The software-driven car, as the most complex mobile device, particularly benefits from the cooperation of the open source community," said Lynn Longo, CTO of CARIAD.

"As one of the leading software companies in the automotive sector, we advocate for open cooperation and will promote innovations within the framework of the Eclipse Foundation to set standards in automotive core software," he added.

Eclipse Foundation Executive Director Mike Milinkovich welcomed CARIAD "and its contributions to the Software-Defined Vehicles Working Group."

"The entire automotive software ecosystem is undergoing rapid and fundamental changes. A shared platform and tools, which the entire industry can use and develop together, is needed to accelerate this transformation. Eclipse SDV's vision of an open source, code-first platform for the software-defined vehicle will radically change the way the automotive industry develops automotive software," Milinkovich said.

CARIAD will contribute individual software components of the VW operating system. OS and the VW automotive cloud. AC as open source software, which are part of the uniform and scalable software platform on which up to 40 million Volkswagen Group cars will be driven by 2030.

These are, for example, basic functionalities that allow for rapid communication between the different components of the vehicle and can be used in a modular way, as well as scaled efficiently within the industry.
