Orbia Strengthens U.S. Electrolyte Production for Lithium-Ion Batteries

International. Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials, a business unit of Orbia Advance Corporation, announced a significant expansion in its production capacity for custom electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries.

This growth comes after the beta launch in 2023, which allowed the company to position itself as a key player in the development of solutions for the transition to clean energy.

With the construction of a new 11,000-square-foot plant in Madison, Wisconsin, scheduled to begin operations in early 2024, Orbia is looking to reduce lead times and meet the growing demand for high-quality, locally produced electrolytes.

This expansion responds to the projected exponential growth of the lithium-ion battery supply chain, which is expected to grow by 30% annually until 2030, reaching a market value of more than $400 billion.

"Localizing the supply of key battery components is critical to Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials' strategy," said Gregg Smith, president of the business unit. "We are committed to facilitating the energy materials revolution with products made in the USA."

Orbia's custom electrolyte offering, which includes specialized solvents, salts, and additives, has already benefited key industry companies such as Navitas Systems, Enovix, Lithion Battery, and Forge Nano. These companies are developing advanced batteries for applications in energy storage, consumer electronics, and specialized sectors such as the military, backed by a recent $8.4 billion contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.

The expansion also reinforces Orbia's strategic position in the battery materials market. The company, which acquired Silatronix in 2021, plans to continue expanding its fluorine-based materials offerings, including a new joint venture with SYENSQO for PVDF production and an initiative to manufacture LiPF6 with the backing of the U.S. Department of Energy.
