Aftermarket grew 8.6% in 2023

United States. Light vehicle growth in 2024 is expected to reach a solid 5.9%, and the total light, medium, and heavy-duty auto aftermarket is now expected to be a $617.3 billion industry by 2027.

The newly released 2025 Auto Care Factbook report shows that the automotive aftermarket industry had a growth rate of 8.6% in 2023, exceeding projections and demonstrating stable and continuous year-over-year growth.

The car care industry exceeded expectations in 2023. Despite challenges such as persistent inflation, the aftermarket demonstrated resilience: total sales of the light vehicle aftermarket in the United States grew by 8.6% in 2023 to reach $392 billion, exceeding projections of 8.1% in the previous year. Light vehicle growth in 2024 is expected to reach a solid 5.9%, and the total light, medium, and heavy-duty auto aftermarket is now expected to be a $617.3 billion industry by 2027.

"As U.S. credit card debt hits an all-time high of more than $17 trillion in 2024, Americans are feeling the brunt of inflation and choosing more savings options when possible, including maintaining their cars," said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO of the Auto Care Association.

"For many of the 236 million licensed drivers in the U.S., driving is not a luxury, it's an everyday necessity, and the automotive aftermarket is proving to be the most viable option for affordable services and repairs for many Americans as their budgets tighten. This year's Factbook report underscores this cost-awareness trend for the American consumer, from the barbershop to the repair shop."

The Auto Care Association launched its online publications: the 2025 Auto Care Factbook and the 2025 Auto Care Factbook & Lang Annual. Annual reports are the standard for automotive aftermarket industry data and include critical information for aftermarket companies to make informed, data-driven decisions for the future.

This 34th edition of the Auto Care Factbook report provides more new data than ever before, including insights into how the automotive care industry remains resilient in the face of economic challenges, the latest industry and consumer trends, expanded international market performance, and more.

The Auto Care Factbook & Lang Annual 2025 includes the Auto Care Factbook plus the Lang Annual, which provides a comprehensive and complementary overview of the U.S. light vehicle aftermarket and presents information and analysis not available from any other source.
