Passion and determination, the two words that define Joe De Santino

Joe De Santino's story is a testament to how passion, determination, and faith can forge an extraordinary career path.
By Laura Restrepo C.

From his beginnings as a young entrepreneur to becoming a benchmark in the automotive industry, Joe has proven that success is the result of perseverance, adaptation, and commitment to strong values.

Born and raised in Miami in 1962, Joe De Santino grew up in a household where hard work was a virtue. With a curious and innovative spirit, from a young age he showed an interest in technology and business. In 1982, he earned a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Florida International University, a decision that marked the beginning of a career that would soon cross borders and sectors.

At the age of 18, Joe got his first job as a product manager for Atari video games. Although it was a promising position, he soon discovered his interest in leading and developing his own projects. This is how he founded his first computer program development company. However, his destiny changed radically in 1986, when he immersed himself in the automotive sector, an industry that quickly captivated him with its dynamism and unique challenges.

A path full of challenges and achievements

The transition to the automotive world led him to work with a customer specializing in automatic transmission kits and components. This career shift not only broadened his horizons, but laid the groundwork for the achievements that would follow. In 2000, when the company he worked for was acquired by SPX Filtran, Joe took on the challenge of becoming Director of International Sales, a role in which he strengthened his reputation as a visionary leader.

With a solid background, Joe decided to take a leap into global entrepreneurship. It established a joint venture in China dedicated to the manufacture of filters for automatic transmissions, consolidating operations in both the United States and Asia. However, trade tensions between the United States and China in 2019 forced it to restructure its operations. This challenge did not stop him. That's when he took over as General Manager for the Americas at SUMAX Industry Ltd., a leading manufacturer of timing chain kits for engines.

Personal Resilience: Two-Time Cancer Survivor

One of the most inspiring chapters in Joe's life is his fight and victory against cancer, not once but twice. In his second battle, he received a bone marrow transplant that saved his life. For Joe, this experience not only reaffirmed his faith in God, but also gave him a new perspective on what really matters: family, health, and the legacy we leave on others.

Although his job keeps him constantly traveling, Joe takes every opportunity to be close to his loved ones. She enjoys regular visits from her children and grandchildren, and looks forward to her youngest daughter, 27, getting married and continuing to expand the family.

In her words, "Time with family is invaluable, and finding that work-life balance is one of my greatest accomplishments."

Current challenges and vision for the future

Today, Joe is focused on applying his vast experience to take SUMAX to the next level. His goal is to position the company as a leader in the manufacture of timing chain kits, establishing a strong and ethical distribution model. For him, success is not only measured in terms of financial results, but also in the positive impact he can have on his team, his clients and his family.

Joe also highlights the importance of innovation and adaptation in an ever-evolving market. "The opportunities are there for those who are creative and looking for unique solutions. The key is not to settle and always be willing to learn and grow."

Reflections on Leadership and Human Relations

One of the highlights of Joe's philosophy is his focus on human relationships. For him, leadership is not just about leading, but about inspiring and empowering others. "I hope I've left a lasting impression on the people I've worked with, not only because of what we've accomplished together, but also because of the values I've tried to pass on."

The impact of industrial evolution in Latin America

In his analysis of the automotive industry in Latin America, Joe acknowledges that the last 30 years have been marked by constant evolution. From the challenges of globalization to disruptions in supply chains, the industry has faced significant changes. However, Joe is optimistic about the future, as long as companies remain innovative and committed to quality and service.
